Salma Hayek was born in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, on September 2, 1968. Salma's parents invested in her future early, by sending her off to a Catholic boarding school in Louisiana when she was 12 years old. Unfortunately, Salma was a prankster and a troublemaker, and this quality soon got her expelled from the school. Salma finished high school soon after that, and lived for a couple of years with her aunt in Houston before attending college at 17,deciding to study international relations. But desire to become an actress won out, and she confronted her parents about her decision to go for a career as an actress.
Facing opposition from both of her parents, Salma started acting in plays and tv shows. Her first huge role was in the a Mexican soap opera called Teresa. Playing the leading character, Salma rose in popularity all over Mexico. All though her success was just huge, Salma wanted more, and she left it all behind when she moved to Hollywood in 1991. After 18 months of English lessons and frantic auditions, she finally started to adjust to the lifestyle.
Her first big role came after Salma's appearance on a cable-access talk show that was witnessed by the Mexican-American director Robert Rodriguez. It wasn't long before Rodriguez got Salma to play the female lead in his first major studio release, Desperado, which became a runaway hit. This movie exposed Salma to the American audience.
Salma appeared in a couple of other movies, including Fair Game and Fled, and even though her roles were small, she continued to further establish herself as a main-stay actress. She also appeared in 54, along with Neve Campbell and Mike Myers. She was also the leading female in this summer's Will Smith movie, Wild Wild West.
What can we expect in the future? Well, for one thing she will star in Kevin Smith's newest movie, Dogma (November 11th), which will surely be a hit with Salma fans. She is also going to appear in these upcoming movies; Frida, and The Velocity of Gary. |
