Sophie Marceau`s real name is "Sophie Maupu" and she was born in Gentilly, France. Gentilly is a suburb to Paris and a very small place in general. Until Sophie was fourteen she lived in Gentilly, helping her family within the family-business. They had a small store at the time, in which Sophie used to work sometimes. Her father was also a truck driver. At age fourteen was a turning point. That was when she started acting.
She heard that a French movie director (Claude Pinoteau) was looking for new talents to use in his new film, called "La Boum". So, she left the quiet life in Gentilly and went to Paris. In Paris, Sophie won the "talent-hunt" which would lead to a contract in the new movie. La Boum turned out to be a true success. The directors then cut out "La Boum II", with the star being Sophie Marceau. Later on, she won a Cesar for that part. That was in 1983, and the category was "Most Promising Actress". Then, as she got the money, she cut loose from Studio Gaumont to get a cast in Zulawskis upcoming new movie LŽamour braque. The cost was one million francs. Sophie was sixteen years old at that time...
Sophie was afraid to make a legal offence by cutting loose from Gaumont, but found a solution to the problem, and got to do her part in LŽamour Braque.
"Of course, I had to borrow the money", she once said, "I didn't have such an amount. People did everything to keep me from doing L'Amour braque with Zulawski. It was violent and almost racist".
Later on, Sophie Marceau was well known in her own country. The rest of the world, however, knew very little about her. Her first English-speaking part was the part that really woke people up in the rest of the world. Acting as the beautiful French princess Isabelle, she won a lot of fans, just by showing her face on the screen.
Mel Gibson was the director in that movie, and the name of the movie was "Braveheart". Nowadays, she is well known in many parts of the world, and one of the most respected actresses in her own country. And why shouldn't she be just that? Her stunning beauty and tremendous talent gives her every right to call herself one of the most proficient actresses there is.
Sophie Marceau did direct one film of her own. That film was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in...Cannes, and that was in 1996. The name of that screenplay is "L`Aube à l`envers", and she wrote it while shooting Braveheart.
Sophie Marceau has been critical of French cinema. She once said; "It's great that American cinema poses such a threat. In France, we have all these pseudo-amateurs who don't have a new idea in their heads." She has also said that she likes American movies in general, and that American directors will give you more of an opportunity to act with a "free" character. |
